Durham A-Z: J is forJazz Exhibit Opening Party
J is for Jazz, the tenth installment in Durham: A-Z, explores a piece of the rich history of jazz in Durham. Local jazz studies programs at North Carolina Central University and Duke University, coupled with an enthusiastic community, provided students with performance opportunities and experience both in and out of the classroom. Christian Scott

Trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah is an artist who perpetually moves forward. He's been killing it for years, playing at the top of his game since he was a kid in New Orleans and putting out album after album over the years with depth and emotion and scope and the best players around. As an educator in the Crescent City, his latest band configuration is made up largely of young, killing musicians who he had the pleasure of guiding in their youth, incorporating the modernity of his own sound with the craftsmanship (in numerous regards) of the old masters of the genre. This says nothing about his boldness on the horns he designed himself; the stories he can tell in life, in song, and in breaks on the bandstand (his stage banter is worth the price of admission alone); his overall general swagger and style. His latest album, Stretch Music, shows all this. His second AoC Fest performance, and one of numerous rolls through Durham, will say that even more. - Anthony Dean-Harris Bio - Christian Scott, also known as Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah (born March 31, 1983, in New Orleans, Louisiana) is a two-time Edison Award winning (2010 and 2012) and Grammy Award nominated trumpeter... Marquis Hill

If there's someone who has put a brand on the modern day Chicago jazz scene, one could say it's trumpeter Marquis Hill. The 2014 Thelonious Monk Competition winner has consistently released albums, the latest of which is The Way We Play, that capture the post-bop sound, meld it with hip hop beats, tosses in a little spoken word every now and then, sidles along sweetly, cranks up the boom bap, and so many other things that highlight Hill's versatility and constant ability to please. Hill simply doesn't stop, so much to the point that dude has been on the case long before the Monk recognition, but it certainly didn't hurt. It helps to be hip to the guy, his Chicago crew, and every little bit of his sound. It's clear you're going to be hearing it for a while. - Anthony Dean-Harris Bio -Trumpeter and composer Marquis Hill is widely recognized as one of the preeminent voices on the instrument of his generation. Raised in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, his introduction to music was made by taking up the drum kit in the fourth grade. However, after being inspired by a cousin his focus soon shifted to what was to become his primary instrument, the trumpet. At 12 years of age, Mr. Hill became a member of the South Shore Youth Jazz Ensemble under the direction of saxophonist and educator Ronald Carter. He has been an active participant in the programs offered at Ravinia including the Ravinia Jazz Scholars and the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, the former of which brought him into contact with mentors Bobby Broom, Tito Carillo, and Willie Pickens. Mr... Read More →

Theo Croker

There's a real artistry to the way trumpeter Theo Croker presents himself. Oh, sure, he can slay on the horn, but with ever growing electronic effects, there's something more here. His releases have always had some futuristic bent to them, the latest of which with his group DVRKFUNK, Escape Velocity, keeps the angled dopeness flowing. It's a music of its time while certainly still being ahead of it. That's how artists work. They also tend to work with other artists, so Croker's playing with drummer Kassa Overall, who typically embodies dopeness, is also a good indicator of the fun, free, but still quite pointed sound that Croker projects. It's kind of weird but he's clearly thought about that. -Anthony Dean-Harris | | Bio - Theo Croker plays on the razor-sharp edge, merging genres and idioms. He is a... Read More →
