If there's someone who has put a brand on the modern day Chicago jazz scene, one could say it's trumpeter Marquis Hill. The 2014 Thelonious Monk Competition winner has consistently released albums, the latest of which is The Way We Play, that capture the post-bop sound, meld it with hip hop beats, tosses in a little spoken word every now and then, sidles along sweetly, cranks up the boom bap, and so many other things that highlight Hill's versatility and constant ability to please. Hill simply doesn't stop, so much to the point that dude has been on the case long before the Monk recognition, but it certainly didn't hurt. It helps to be hip to the guy, his Chicago crew, and every little bit of his sound. It's clear you're going to be hearing it for a while. - Anthony Dean-Harris Bio -Trumpeter and composer Marquis Hill is widely recognized as one of the preeminent voices on the instrument of his generation. Raised in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, his introduction to music was made by taking up the drum kit in the fourth grade. However, after being inspired by a cousin his focus soon shifted to what was to become his primary instrument, the trumpet. At 12 years of age, Mr. Hill became a member of the South Shore Youth Jazz Ensemble under the direction of saxophonist and educator Ronald Carter.
