Terrace Martin and the Polly Seeds

Terrace Martin was one of the numerous super talented jazz musicians on one of the most hyped albums of 2015, Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly. The cross genre landmark album showed Martin in touches here and there as part of a tapestry of accomplishment, but the dude has been around for a minute. His latest album, Velvet Portraits, is his sixth release as a leader (and even that one still managed to wrangle Robert Glasper, Thundercat, and Lalah Hathaway) that feels like an encapsulation of his relationship with California, very cool and amenable to head nods. But that's Martin-- cool and amenable to head nods. It's the kinds of style one would expect from someone who has worked with Snoop Dogg, Stevie Wonder, Charlie Wilson, and Busta Rhymes, or the kind of style one would expect from a young, two-time Grammy winner who is super talented, has an ear for various genres, and who has been around for a minute. - Anthony Dean-Harris
